The National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) currently is housed in an outdated 54-year-old facility on an isolated 840-acre island off Long Island, N.Y. The facility’s mission is to research deadly and highly infectious animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth, swine fever, Rift Valley fever and Nipah virus. Some of the agents are considered transmittable to humans. The current NBAF is classified as a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Nipah virus.
The nearly 45-acre site on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan is one of six contenders for the $450 million facility (nipah virus).
